Chemistry Resume

A chemistry resume must present the information quickly, clearly, and in a way that makes your experience relevant to the position in consideration. That means condensing your information to its most powerful form.
Preliminary Requirement :
  • Research about your career alternatives and organizations of interest before starting your resume.
  • Organize your thoughts and ideas into your resume.
  • Refer to samples of resumes from various guides.
  • Avoid using 'I' throughout your resume

Objective : A job objective tells the reader about the intent of the resume. Without a job objective, it is difficult to discuss the skills you have that will apply to the prospective job. For example
'To use my knowledge and skills to enrich the work environment and to gain a well-ranked position in the field of environmental chemistry'.
Qualification Summary : This section should consist of a minimum of three and preferably not more than ten 'bullet points' each describing an achievement in terms of results. For example, instead of 'Implemented a trade match system' try 'Implemented a trade match system that reduced processing time by over 50%, hence reducing the overtime expenditure by 10K per month'.
Education : List your highest degree first.

  2. Degree, major and year awarded
  3. GPA (optional)
Special Skills : Most typically includes computer and language skills. May also include job specific skills of any sort:
  • Computer skills: List languages, systems and programs.
  • Language skills: Specify language and your level of proficiency .
Experience : Highlight your achievements in the resume.
Explain :
  • Full-time employment
  • Work study
  • Summer employment
  • Internships
List :
  • Job title
  • Employer name and location (city and state)
  • Dates of employment
  • Active description of your responsibilities and achievements
For Example :
Lab Technician
Chemistry Department, NMIMT

Inorganic Research
  • Participated in environmental study of New Mexico.
  • Participated in bauxite leaching project.
  • Utilized wet chemical, electrochemical, AA and other spectrophotometric analyses.
Organic Research
  • Developed a specific ion exchange resin.
  • Gained experience in IR, NMR, x-ray and organic synthesis.
Activities : You may want to list your extra-curricular activities that involve organizations, clubs, student governments, athletics and professional affiliations. You may use action verbs to describe your responsibilities and accomplishments just as you did in the Experience section.
Areas of Special Expertise or Profile : This is an optional section that can be included in the chemistry resume. If you decide to include 'Areas of Special Expertise', then use bullet points. The Profile can be written in paragraph form (if it's five sentences or less) or in bullet point format.
